How to Install MS Office Word's Default Global Template (Normal.dot)

       The MS Office Word's default global template (Normal.dot) as provided here is a tool I developed over years for efficiently formatting, composing, and editing MS Word documents. They are intended primarily for students, teachers, and researchers in the fields of Linguistics, Translation Studies, and Language/Translation Technology, though people working in other areas may find it a very handy tool for them, too.

       You may download these tools for academic and professional uses for free. No commercial use or development of them is allowed without prior permission from me.

       Follow the instructions below to install these templates:

[For MS Office 2003]

        Download “Normal.zip” to a folder in your computer.

        Unzip the “Normal.dot” file in it to:

       [Windows 7] C:\Users\YOU [the name you use to log into Windows]\ApplData\Roamingt\Microsoft\Templates\;

       [Windows 2000 and Windows XP] C:\Documents and Settings\Current User [This may simply be your own name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\;

       [Windows 98 and Windows ME] C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\.

       When prompted for replacing the “Normal.dot” file in the directory or not, answer “Yes”.

[For MS Office 2007 and later]

        Do the same as above.

        Launch MS Office Word and then exit it. When prompted for saving the “Normal.dotm” template when exiting Word, answer “Yes”.

Note:

        If you are prompted for a password when unzipping the downloaded file, please send me an email at kepingATnju.edu.cn, identifying yourself and telling me your purpose of using the template. I’ll email you the password as soon as I receive your email.

        If you have developed and saved some styles, macros, and/or AutoText entries in the original templates in your computer, you may want to back up your original templates before replacing them with the downloaded ones.
