Course Title

LANGUAGE STUDIES FOR TRANSLATION

Course Description (including aims and objectives)

This introductory course is designed primarily for students who take translation as a major or minor. Special problems posed by linguistic/cultural differences to translators will be approached from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Cases involving English, Chinese, and other languages will be examined to demonstrate the implications carried by and the insights provided by contrastive analysis for the practice and study of translation. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to appreciate major differences between Chinese and English at various linguistic levels and to use the principles and methods of contrastive analysis to help with problem solving in real-life translation contexts.
